We have found several varieties that do well in Idaho. We need a bamboo that not only survives our cold winters, but can also handle our hot, dry summers. Here are our favorite CLUMPING VARIETIES:
FARGESIA RUFA.
Clumping Bamboo 6' x 6' Needs Shade in Late Afternoon
This bamboo can take full sun and will get larger in other climates. However, we have found our summers a little too hot and it does much better in shade. It is a non-invasive bamboo and will not spread.

FAGESIA NITIDA "Blue Fountain Bamboo"
Clumping Bamboo 6' x 6' Needs Afternoon Shade
Nitida needs quite a bit of shade in Idaho, but adds a lovely accent to any garden. New culms have a powdery blue tint to them and it has a bit of a weep to the canes, thus the name "Blue Fountain". it is a non-invasive bamboo and will not spread.
