The following are our favorite bamboos for making privacy hedges or just to enjoy. They are all invasive and do require management or they will spread. Here in Idaho, you can control their spread by irrigation, root pruning or by installing a barrier.
Phyllostachys a. "SPECTABILIS"
Running Bamboo 15' - 25' Tall Full Sun or Part Shade -15 Degrees
This is our best selling bamboo. It has nice butter yellow canes with green strips. New shoots have a purplish tint and leaves sometimes have fine yellow striping. Canes sometimes form a characteristic "kink" or "zigzag". This is a hardy bamboo that grows well in our climate. It will fill in quickly.
We carry several other varieties of Phyllostachys with the same growing habits but with different cane colors, such as:
"YELLOW GROVE" Green with Yellow Striping
"GOLDEN CROOKSTEM" Bright yellow canes that sometimes turn orange in the sun.
"BISSETTI" Dark green canes and rich green leaves. A little smaller than the other varieties listed.
